Ida Schmidt-Chait
Warsaw, Poland
I was born Ida Rosenberg in Warsaw, Poland on October 30, 1931 to Israel Rosenberg and Miriam (Wosk) Rosenberg. As a young man, my father was sent to Warsaw to be apprenticed as a tailor. He met my mother while making deliveries and they married shortly thereafter.
We were sent to the Gulag in Siberia by the Russians in 1939 and then transferred to Uzbekistan in 1942. We survived the war and were moved to a displaced persons camp in Germany.
We immigrated to the United States in 1949, settling in New York City. I met my husband Alfred Schmidt in 1951 and we were married in 1953. He was a Holocaust survivor from Vilna, Lithuania. We had four children and moved to Baltimore from New York in 1965.
