Zagreb (Glina), Croatia

I was 4 years old when Hitler came into our small village of Glina, Croatia. They came to our home and swept us away to jail. My uncle Zvonko Novakovic managed to steal Nazi uniforms, forged papers and got us out of jail.

Mom and Dad lost most of their families in concentration camps. I lost a couple of years out of my life while running and hiding. I missed first, second and third grade. Once in the United States, I struggled to adjust to a new culture and be accepted.

Until this day, I have fears that will never go away. One good thing that has come out of all this is that it has made me a very strong person.
