Alice Masters

Trstena Orava, Czechoslovakia

I was born on May 10, 1925 in the village of Trstena Orava, Czechoslovakia. I had two sisters. My mother’s younger brother urged my parents to send us on a Kindertransport to England – we left at the end of June, 1939.

We lived in a children’s home with 50 refugee girls until we were all dispersed. I moved to London and lived with my older sister until 1942. Then we moved to the YWCA where we lived for five years. Unfortunately, none of my family survived, other than my two sisters and one uncle.

In 1950, I married my husband Peter Masters. We have three children and seven grandchildren. It took 50 years for me to find out that it was Sir Nicholas Winton who saved my sister and me and 666 children from Czechoslovakia by arranging the Kindertransports.
